I was listening to a secular radio station on the way home from work yesterday, and the host was reading excerpts from an article that suggested that young women should live at home with their parents until they were ready for marriage. The author suggested they should move from their parent’s home into the home of their husband, thereby making it easier for them to submit as wives.

I’ve never written a blog post targeted to male readers before, but I need help only a man can give.

My kids tickle me pink lately. My three-year-old keeps me laughing all day long, and my one-year-old has a new “first” every day. Watching him transform from baby to big boy is a thrill. But . . . I haven’t always felt this way.

Daughters. How we long for them and love them. But what exhausting little creatures they are! Ask almost any parent and I think you will hear the same thing. They love to talk . . . and talk . . . and talk.

For girls, catfights are typical growing pains, a traditional rite of passage. We moms can effectively extinguish catfights and douse the power of cliques by using the same methods the vet suggested: Shed light on the situation, keep the disinfectant handy, and keep things slippery, so as not to allow the enemy to gain a foothold.

Years ago, my husband announced he was planning a surprise lunch for my birthday. With great anticipation, I imagined a romantic afternoon at a lovely restaurant with a view, or in the heart of the city. Nothing could have prepared me for how I felt when we pulled into the parking lot of Cracker Barrel!

Some might say it was “lucky” she rode that elevator with a hospice nurse who could encourage her and empathize with her pain. I don’t say that. In this busy hospital, it was unlikely for the elevator to go up seven floors without stopping, with only two people inside. I know in my heart God arranged this meeting.

I’m not saying we should never give input or share our thoughts. I’m simply suggesting letting go of the little stuff.

You couldn’t miss her. She had silver hair and a sweet face that made you sure she was somebody’s “nana.” The first time I saw her, she was laying on the altar sobbing.

Sometimes when you’ve been praying for something or somebody for what seems like all your life, you tend to think God is off getting a sandwich or that He just hasn’t heard you somehow. You think He doesn’t care or that maybe you haven’t been good enough or all those other untruths you’re tempted to believe.

Barry and I met and married twenty-eight years ago. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing: He liked my then-red hair and green eyes; I liked his broad shoulders and sense of humor. Plus, he was easy to talk to. As unbelievers, neither of us had a clue what our future would be. We just thought a life together would be a kick. A relationship with Christ was the last thing on our minds!

Like many of you, I was glued to the news last week awaiting the announcement of a verdict in the case of Casey Anthony, who was accused of murdering her two-year-old daughter, Caylee.

As a young woman, one of my greatest fears was “missing out on God’s will for my life.” I think I lived under the pressure that one wrong move would spell disaster, and God’s plans for me would all be thwarted!

This picture of my grandchildren is sweet, but I would much rather see Ben’s (a.k.a. Spiderman) blue eyes and endearing smile. While the mask covering his face troubles me, it probably troubles God even more when we wear masks that attempt to keep Him—and others—from looking into our hearts.

I thought being a good Christian meant keeping a lot of rules (don't drink, don't have sex before marriage, don't cheat on tests or taxes, don't, don't, don't). So I didn't. And that made me feel good and proud about myself.

Somehow I always knew the standard was perfection. Maybe it's because I am a firstborn. Or maybe it's because I was raised on the Bible. Either way, I knew I didn't measure up to God's holy standard. Sadly, it took me years to realize that Jesus was the source of my perfection . . .

It used to be that work was contained within certain boundaries. I remember back at the turn of the century if I sent an email "after hours," I was likely to get a response that started with, "What are you doing at work so late?" But now, thanks to smart phones and other devices, our work spills into all sorts of hours and no one seems to notice anymore.

"Few subjects captivate my heart more than the historical reality and the future hope of seeing the church saturated by the manifest presence of Jesus through revival. But I don’t love revival alone; it is my love for other things that compels me to long for, pray for and seek true, biblical revival . . ."

As you celebrate the freedoms others have won for us, I’m also praying Jesus continues to free us up to fully live and enjoy the abundant life He purchased for us through His life, death, and resurrection! With that in mind, here are twenty-two liberating truths to wrap your arms and heart around this Independence Day.

This is my favorite part . . . God created gender be a picture of the best love story ever told. He assigned each of us a role to play in telling the story of His grace, love, and ultimate rescue of His beloved church.
