I sat in front of a little girl and her daddy on one of my recent flights. We had been sitting on the tarmac for forty-five minutes when the captain's voiced pierced our collective silence with these words . . .

If we're supposed to be somewhere at 6 p.m., I want to be there by 5:45 p.m. (probably has something to do with those "on time" awards they gave us in Sunday School when I was growing up). My husband, on the other hand, is perfectly happy with a 6:15 or 6:20 p.m. arrival. As you can imagine, this has been a source of quite a bit of tension over the years!

There are at least a half-dozen sitcoms coming this fall that center on lead male characters struggling with the changing dynamics of men as they relate to the successful women surrounding them. According to one executive producer, "Manliness is under assault."

I will never forget what I witnessed and participated in last week. You’ve probably read the verse that says, “And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.” But have you seen it in action? I have!

For most of my life I could have been the poster child for the lie of "I'm not good enough." If feeling inadequate was an Olympic event, I would have been on the
Wheaties box. It was the undercurrent of my entire existence until I finally realized who I was in Christ.

During a Q and A session with the duo, someone asked what problem they are seeing young women dealing with the most often. I expected to hear horror stories of sexual abuse, eating disorders, or thoughts of suicide. Instead, they looked at each other and said together, “anxiety.”

I relate a whole lot to Peter. On his own, he was a fearsome mess. Matthew 26 shows him so knock-knee scared he's cussing and lying out his teeth, saying he never even knew this Jesus-dude. And yet, just weeks later three thousand souls are saved after he preaches one power-packed sermon. What caused this dramatic difference in Peter?

Apparently Eve was no push-over or faint-hearted wallflower. She was bold enough to hold a conversation with a talking serpent, but foolish enough to make an independent and rebellious choice. Her choice led to her curse.

Personally, I think fierceness is a good thing and a bad thing! I believe that within every woman’s breast lies a fierce heart, and her fierceness is tied to her calling and her curse.

It never occurred to me (at the time) that I was being disrespectful of my husband. I was in “functional mode”:

God's grace is like an ambulance that races to the point of our need the minute a call for help is made. But if we don't call, the ambulance doesn't come. If we refuse to admit our desperate neediness, we forfeit the grace that could have been ours.

That’s when Nancy did it—dropped the bomb. Knowing how much I wanted to be married, she encouraged me not to live alone. She said that when we live alone, we tend to get set in our ways. Maybe it doesn’t sound crazy to you, but at the time it sounded so . . . counter-cultural! I didn’t like hearing it, and yet, it stuck with me as . . . true.

When I was a little girl, I was fascinated by a couple who would occasionally drop by my parent’s home for a visit. Although elderly, the wife was still an elegant beauty. I’d pull up a chair in the kitchen beside my mom and we’d eagerly listen to her stories of travel and adventure . . .
