Rock-solid women

Posted on 01.17.10 by Paula Hendricks

Buenos tardes!

Saturday, January 16
After a most incredible tour of the island, some Italian pizza, and a trip to the grocery store for breakfast items, we finally met the women we came all this way to see. They were warm, welcoming, and beautiful. But, that isn’t what impressed me most about them . . .

Gathering with rock-solid women

As we sipped iced tea in Lisa’s living room, these twenty women who attended the True Woman ’08 conference shared with us how dramatically God used the conference to transform their thinking and living.

As the afternoon faded into evening, it quickly became apparent to me that these women have something I don’t: their trust in God is rock-solid. Their faces and lives are illuminated with joy in the middle of difficult—even terrifying—circumstances.

Sunday, January 17
I didn’t have to wait long to gain the insight I desired into the secret behind these rock-solid women. Dr. Miguel Nunez, pastor of International Bible Church spoke from Psalm 46 this morning:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea . . .”

Interestingly enough, the verse above is describing an earthquake—an earthquake like the one that just occurred in Haiti. In the face of real, terrifying danger, the writer of this psalm is not fearful. He has found God to be His total security—a refuge in the midst of danger.

Pastor Nunez said that the amount of fear and anxiety we experience in our lives is very telling of the knowledge of—and intimacy with God—that we have. He reminded us that God isn’t an idea; He’s a Person.

The true tragedy is not found in the way you or I die—whether it’s peacefully in our sleep or tragically in a collapsed building. The true tragedy is dying without knowing Jesus Christ, who saves us from our sins and fills our emptiness like nothing else this world has to offer.

If you, like me, long to be calm and unshakeable in the midst of natural disasters, destroyed relationships, or the loss of employment, our only hope is to get to know our God better—and sooner rather than later.

  1. Amen, Paula! This was deep. and true! That we need to know God better in order to conquer fear and anxiety; to be calm and unshakeable in the face of whatever may come. I've heard it said that Martin Luther used to love Psalm 46 and loved to read it/have it read when there was adversity facing him and his people. (Most people probably know that Luther wrote "A Mighty Fortress is Our God"...) I'm looking forward to hearing these women's testimonies. Just hearing of their rock-solid faith is encouraging, and of their godly pastor.

  2. God is a very present help in time of trouble. How would we ever find that truth to be real if we never experienced trials or troubles? We know we are SUPPOSED be thankful, but to really understand and BE thankful is another thing entirely. It is encouraging to hear the true word of thankfulness from those who have been through some very real trials. Thank you for sharing this with us! God is truly faithful!! What a living hope we have in Christ.

  3. Dear Paula:
Anything you could see among us is not because us... is the Lord in us!!! Is His power, His healing, His comfort, His love and His grace in us!! One verse comes to my mind:
"Not to us, LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness". Psalm115:1

We bless Him for the fellowship, for your visit and the blessing of your ministry in our lives. May He continue bringing us nearer.
    In Him,

  6. Our God is an awesome God, a true God, a good God, a faithful God, a loving God. He is far more than words can describe!
If anything good you may see in us is only because of His presence in our life!
